Most Catholic churches in Costa Rica face the West, so that when attending the service you sit facing East towards Jerusalem.

fun fact friday!
DID YOU KNOW???
According to an online source (because you can totally believe everything you read on the Internet), McDonald's and Burger King offer home delivery in Costa Rica! Also, it breaks my heart a little, but Pepsi apparently out sells Coke down there.
I might have to single-handedly boost the Coke sales by having McDonald's DC delivered to my house...This could be dangerous...

fun fact friday!
A little history lesson...
DID YOU KNOW???
In 1938, a minister challenged youth leader Jim Rayburn to develop a way to reach kids at the local high school who had no interest in church. Rayburn started a weekly club for kids to meet in Gainesville, TX. It was fun and energetic, with skits, songs, and a simple message of Jesus Christ.
After seminary, on October 16, 1941, Rayburn officially established Young Life with four others. We still use his club model today, showing kids that life with Christ is fun, adventurous, and life changing. (Planning weekly Clubs will be one of my primary responsibilities while in CR.)
In 1946, YL staff included 20 men and women in several states. That year, its headquarters moved to Colorado Springs, CO, where it still is today. Volunteer leadership started at Wheaton College in the late 1940s and has expanded to over 19,000 volunteer leaders today!
In its early years, YL was primarily a ministry focused on suburban high school students. In 1972, it expanded to nearly 25 multi-ethnic urban areas. Today there are more than 700 multicultural ministries reaching more than 18,000 inner-city, racially underrepresented and poor young people. WyldLife for middle schoolers and Capernaum for kids with disabilities started in the 80s. Reaching kids in rural areas was next through the Small Town Initiative. Most recently, YL has expanded to include YoungLives, which focuses on pregnant teens and young mothers, and Young Life College, which focuses on college students. That's a lot of kids, from a lot of backgrounds, who get to hear the Good News of the Gospel!!
Young Life is not just in the US. (Obviously, as I will be in Costa Rica.) Currently, there are American and national staff and volunteers reaching kids through more than 700 ministries in more than 70 countries!
Over the years and across the globe, Young Life's mission remains the same: to introduce adolescents to Jesus Christ and to help them grow in their faith. Grateful to have experienced the transformative power of this mission first hand, as I met the Lord through YL as a high schooler. And now I am both excited and humbled to be a part of this ministry in Costa Rica. Praying that all kids in San Jose come to know the Lord!

#4weeksofliving
Well, it's official. One month left in Richmond! Can't even believe it! Can't believe that I've lived here for almost 2 years and that I'm leaving in just four short weeks. We've decided to make this the best four weeks yet! To fill it with all my favorite things/activities/places/people of Richmond and to do all the things we've wanted to do here, but haven't done yet. It's going to be a great four weeks! Full of life and joy and laughter and shared experiences.
So last night, my roommate Ginny and I, sat on our balcony and made a list. And we've wasted no time checking off the first couple items! First, Olio. One of my favorite places to eat in RVA. It's delicious! And local. And cute. And pretty much just the best.

And then, some late night tennis! Oh how I'm going to miss the Byrd Park tennis courts. I'm not even good at tennis, but this has become one of my favorite things to do in Richmond!
Grateful for the friends who have, and continue to make, this place so special. Never would I ever imagined this place would be so hard to say goodbye to. Never did I expect to meet such amazing friends who love and care for me so well, and make living life so special. Yes, there is only #4weeksofliving left in RVA. But I hope to be someone who lives all of life, every day, with this same intentional perspective. To show up. To make it count. To dig deep. To try something new. To not put things off till tomorrow. To celebrate. To invest in things that matter.

A little vocabulary lesson...
DID YOU KNOW???
In Costa Rica, a "soda" is a small, informal restaurant that serves traditional meals (chicken, rice, beans, salad) for about $3.
Also, males are called "Ticos" and females "Ticas".

make love your aim.
Make love your aim.
1 Corinthians 14:1, NJB
"From the perspective of the gospel, fundraising is not a response to a crisis. Fundraising is, first and foremost, a form of ministry. It is a way of announcing our vision and inviting other people into our mission (16)."
...
"Even a seemingly small act of generosity can grow into something far beyond what we could ever ask or imagine (see Eph. 3:20): the creation of a community of love in this world
and beyond this world; because wherever love grows, it is stronger than death (1 Cor. 13:8) (24-25)."
